What’s your name, age and occupation?

My name is Daniella, I’m 40 and I am a technician at Apple.

What kind of side hustle do you do?

The two side hustles I participate in are Instacart and TaskRabbit.

Why did you choose these?

I like for both of them the flexibility and the compensation especially on TaskRabbit. It’s better than most gig economy jobs. TaskRabbit is more interesting, I get to work hands-on doing various types of jobs such as installing TV’s, fixing screen doors, mounting things on peoples walls. It’s more interesting than taking someone or something from point A to point B.

What skills do you need to do this side hustle?

For Instacart, you need patience and communication skills because sometimes you need to communicate with the customer. Dealing with ambiguity is necessary because sometimes you’re not finding what the customer wants, or it’s not clear what kind of replacement to get them. For TaskRabbit, it entails a wide range of skills depending on what you’re offering for example: it could be as simple as manual labor which can actually pay a lot if you’re helping someone move, you could have more technical skills and work as a virtual assistant.

What motivated you to do a side hustle?

I was looking to supplement my income to help me pay off debt and also something that was flexible that allowed me to work around my full-time work and personal schedule.

How much time do you spend doing your side hustle?

It depends. I can spend an entire day if i’m not at my regular job or as little as an hour or two a week if I choose.

How much money can you make per hour, per week, per month, per year?

It’s rare but you can make $50/hr depending on the job and the platform but the more common average is $16-$22/hr. I’ve made up to $400/week. Because of my full-time job, I try to not burn myself out, this is why it’s called a side hustle, not a full-time job.

What are the downsides to your side hustle?

It does take away from my personal time outside of the 40 hours at my regular job. It can have wear and tear on my vehicle and there’s a lot of times I don’t make enough per hour which can feel discouraging.

What are your future goals?

To be able to earn enough money to pay off debt and maybe in the future I can use my extra earnings to build up investments.

Any advice for people looking to do a side hustle?

Don’t be afraid to try something new and step outside your comfort zone and right now especially in these times, there’s a lot of options and there’s a lot of people in need of certain services.
