My name is Wanda, I’m 44 and my day job is a safety supervisor.
What kind of side hustle do you do?
I buy and sell comics and other collectibles on Ebay and Mercari.
Why did you choose these?
It also doubles as my hobby and I’m very good at it. I stay knowledgeable on trends and speculation of booms.
What skills do you need to do this side hustle?
A passion for your product. Time to research. Funds. Self-control not to spend more than you make or at minimum break even by finding your hobby.
What motivated you to do a side hustle?
Passion for comics and ability to attend Comic Cons and Collectible Conventions where I have access to rare and hard to find items.
How much time do you spend doing your side hustle?
Pre-Pandemic 2-3 hours a day, During Pandemic 4-5 hours a day.
How much money can you make per hour, per week, per month, per year?
As a side hustle, do not expect to supplement any income. On the months where I’m not putting money back in to more product, I might make a Credit Card payment or two. But months where I actually use profits to pay bills vs re-invest in product are like 1:3
What are the downsides to your side hustle?
Falling in love with your product and not wanting to let it go. (Aka getting high on your own supply) Holding on to product for too long till the trend passes and the value begins to spiral. Very hard to stay up on game unless you're online at all times or responding to iPhone notifications quickly.
What are your future goals?
Decrease my inventory to a manageable level.
Any advice for people looking to do a side hustle?
Download the Key Collector app. Have some self-control. Set limits on purchase vs. sales. If you’re funding a hobby, set a criteria (i.e. Only Star Wars comics, only 1st appearances issues) do not try to be a completist and buy items you don’t love just to fill a checklist.
